UPDATE

The old fuel was "cleansed" prior to the trip (by a guy from Calais, ME no less!) but definitely created some extra soot as you saw in the previous pics. We assume it is burning inefficiently as our incredibly rough estimate of fuel economy is slightly below 1 mpg. We actually covered 140 miles today. This all may change as we didn't start with a full tank, so our next fuel stop should provide a more accurate measure.
